Getting Here

Flights

We recommend flying into either Rome or Florence, both are equidistant to Montepulciano. The Rome airport is serviced by a wider number of airlines, supports the most nonstop options from the U.S., and renting a car is seamless. Alternatively, you can fly “open-jaw” by arriving at one airport and departing from another. This is a great option if you’d like to extend your trip or see more of Italy!

Car Rental

A car is highly recommended to travel from either Rome or Florence to Montepulciano, you can rent a car from either airport. Although you can get close to Montepulciano via train, there is no Uber/Lyft and taxi services are limited.

General Tips

Driving - Please read all of this

Ensure when making a car reservation to select the transmission type. Unless you reserve an automatic, you will be given a manual. Don’t be like Noah and learn how to drive stick in the rental car parking lot of the airport.

An International Drivers Permit is technically required to rent a car within Italy as an American. It is at the discretion of the rental car agency to ask for proof of an IDP but Italy is one of the strictest countries in requiring one alongside a driver’s license. You can acquire one here for $20.

When you are driving, please be aware of “traffic zones” or ZTL. Generally, in a rental car you are not allowed to drive into a city center and will be heavily fined for violating this rule. Most towns have ZTL and will have dedicated parking lots outside the city center to safely park in. Look up parking in whichever city you’re heading to to ensure you don’t break this rule.

Please carry cash for paying at gas stations as sometimes cards do not work. The green pump is what you want to use for gas, it is not diesel. Typically, near the gas cap on your car it will indicate if the type of gas you need is E5 or E10.

We recommend using the Waze app (as opposed to Google Maps) for driving directions as it is typically the most accurate in Italy.

If you are driving, you will most certainly drive on a toll road. The tolls can be paid for with card before you enter the road.

Miscellaneous things:

“Buongiorno” and “grazie” go a long way!

The best gelato is served out of closed, plain-looking metal tins. If the gelato is piled high, colorful, and on display, we’d recommend looking for another shop.

Dining

Dinner service at restaurants typically starts around 8pm. Any time before that is perfect for grabbing a drink and sitting around in a piazza.

Tipping is not customary at restaurants or bars.

Don’t rely on Google reviews to find restaurants! Most Italian restaurants at a baseline serve very good food, restaurants with lots of reviews generally have longer waits and have inflated prices— you can find enjoyable and memorable meals simply by exploring the city you’re in.

Pizzerias and sandwich shops (paninotecas) are great affordable lunch options.

A cappuccino or an espresso (ordered as a caffe) with a cornetto (croissant) is a classic Italian breakfast. Both are taken standing at the bar. Search google for “bars” not coffee shops to find coffee shops. Bars also operate as the name implies later in the day.
